Horsewrap
As a continuous grazer, horses need constant access to good roughage throughout the year. In many stables, hay is the standard staple feed, but increasingly it is not available in sufficient quality. The quality of the hay not only determines the health and performance of the horses, but in the worst case also the profitability of the stable.
For this reason, haylage wrapped in bales has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Compared with hay, haylage is a dust-free alternative that can help prevent horses developing respiratory problems and also help to alleviate coughing symptoms in horses which are sensitive to dust. And it comes with the benefit of not being dependent on long streaks of good harvesting weather and a cold, dry autumn; a couple of days of sunshine will be enough.
There are higher demands for horse silage/haylage than for beef cattle. For example, DM (dry matter) is higher, between 50-65 %, which means that the forage to wrap usually consists of quite mature and stalky plant material, which poses a major challenge for the wrapping film.
This is why we have developed HorseWrap.
A bale wrap, suitable for all wrappers and both round & square bales in all sizes, which comes with an exceptionally high puncture resistance and tear strength.

HorseWrap is specially developed for wrapping mature grass and tough conditions. The film recipe gives the film exceptionally high puncture resistance, tear and wear strength.
HorseWrap was developed and tested in cooperation with experts from SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) and horse owners around Scandinavia. A lot of research by SLU and practical experiences show that silage is an excellent forage for
horses.
Horsewrap is available in many different dimensions, offering solutions for all different types of wrappers and both round & square bales in all sizes, so that also the special needs for small bale producers are covered.

HorseWrap is a specially developed bale wrapping film, that comes with extra high puncture and tear strength and therefore a higher resistance to stalky material. It is the perfect choice for wrapping haylage for horses, which usually comes with a higher dry matter of around 50-65 % and can be a challenge for standard films.
In addition to that, haylage for horses is often traded over large distances because most horse owners do not have own farms or the possibility to produce their own feed. This means that the bales are put through more handling, and the risk of puncture damage is increased. HorseWrap is also specially designed to fit those needs and give the feed
extra protection under these special conditions.
HorseWrap has been developed and tested in cooperation with experts from SLU and horse owners around Scandinavia. A lot of research by SLU and practical experiences show that silage is an excellent forage for horses. Preserved forage packaged in bales is known and gets increasingly popular as feed in the horse business, both for racing and riding horses.
The horse is foremost a grass-eating animal and therefore always needs some form of grass in the ration. In the summer, the grass usually comes from grazing, but during the winter the horse needs some form of conserved grass product that suits its requirements.
Usually, the usual way of conserving grass for horses has been - and still is - to dry it into hay. In years with good harvesting weather and a cold, dry autumn, the chances of dust-free hay with a high nutritional value and high hygienic quality are good. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee good harvesting weather. Rain during harvest leads to a delay in haymaking and ultimately produces hay with low nutritional value and poor hygienic quality. Dusty and mouldy hay is a direct health hazard to both people and horses. Horses can easily develop hypersensitivity to dust, leading to chronic coughs and reduced performance.
Unlike hay, haylage is not dependent on good weather for long harvesting periods; a couple of days of sunshine will be enough.
So before you take the risk and feed your horse poor-quality hay, haylage is an excellent alternative.
Yes!
The production of mini bales is particularly lucrative for equestrians. The small bales are easy to transport, can be taken to events and are easy to ration without running the risk of a big bale spoiling.
That is why we offer HorseWrap – in addition to the regular width of 750 mm – in widths of 250, 300, 360 and 365 mm, providing the perfect solution for all types of mini wrappers.
Haylage is usually a bit more nutritious than hay, mainly due to the slightly earlier harvest and leafier crop. It is possible that the haylage is of a higher nutritional value and the horse fattens even though the concentrated feed has been reduced or removed altogether.
This problem occurs mainly with horses and ponies that are not exercised. In such cases, it is perfectly acceptable to replace some of the haylage with one or more kg of straw.
The simplest way is to use the senses; nose and eyes.
The haylage should smell “good” and not be musty. Low DM contents mean that the haylage will smell acidic (vinegary) as more lactic acid has been formed. The haylage should be green to brown-greenish in colour. If the haylage smells ammoniac, or is slimy or “decomposed” and dark, it should not be fed. Make a habit of looking at and smelling the haylage carefully before it is fed, and you will quickly learn to detect odd smells, an unusual colour or any other abnormal features.
Additionally, you can always get a nutritional analysis of the haylage done. Samples are easily taken and provide the best results in connection with baling.
